St Lawrence Church Choir

St. Lawrence Church Choir

St Lawrence Church choir is responsible for leading the singing during church services while also developing and improving their own individual musical skills through the Royal School of Church Music (RSCM) Voice for Life scheme and membership of other choirs and musical organisations. The choir also lead Choral Evensong every third Sunday of the month at St Lawrence Church at 6pm. The order of the service for each month can be found here.

Membership is open to anyone who can sing and has basic sight reading ability. Many of the singers are members of other choirs or singing groups such as Alton Operatic & Drama Society (AODS), Cantique, Luminosa, Waynflete and Waverley Singers and so on. The choir has sung at Guildford and Winchester Cathedrals in place of the cathedral choirs during their holiday breaks. This has mainly become achievable since our excellent organist, Will Nisbet, assumed the appointment of organist in 2015.

The choir is also a friendly group of individuals who enjoy “extramural” social activities such as days out, parties etc. Members will also produce lighthearted music at informal church functions. The choir even has its very own Barbershop Quartets – “The Altones” (men) & “The Dulcet Tones” (women).

Choir members have achieved major successes in RSCM exams such as Deans/Bishops & Senior Bishops Awards.

Choir practice at St Lawrence church – Fridays 7.00-8.00 pm and Sundays 10.00-1020am. New members – especially sopranos – are always welcome.
